DEFINITION AND APPLICABLE PROCEDURES
|
Consecutive Interpretation means the reproduction in a second language of complex discourse units delivered by participants in an event right after any acting speaker makes a pause to usher in the interpretation or ends his speech. Consecutive Interpretation is deemed a direct communicative act in which non-verbal language and, particularly, visual contact are particularly important.
It is specially meant for bilateral acts with only two working languages and, in most cases, requires the involvement of a single sworn or plain interpreter with bi-directional skills, unless each party to the meeting decides to engage their own separate interpretation services.
Besides bilingual oral skills and field specialisation, the major skills applied to this interpretation mode while the speaker is delivering his speech are memory enhancement and note-taking techniques.
Unlike Simultaneous Interpretation, this mode allows for higher accuracy and faithfulness since the interpreter may briefly interrupt to consult with the speaker, request further explanations of concepts or data, or even advise speakers to moderate discourse speed so as to take down notes in a more precise and effective manner. In our opinion, these features make Consecutive Interpretation the only interpretation mode suitable for official certification purposes by a Sworn Interpreter.
